Andy Robertsons return to pre-season training has been delayed after the Liverpool left-back underwent surgery on his hand.

The Champions League holders confirmed the left-back, who played a pivotal role in his sides success last season, picked up an infection but is expected to be fit enough to travel with the rest of Jurgen Klopps first team squad to the United states next week for the upcoming tour.

Liverpool began their pre-season schedule with a thumping 6-0 win over Tranmere in midweek and continue their preparations with a trip to Bradford tomorrow before friendlies against Borussia Dortmund, Sporting Lisbon, Napoli and Sevilla.

Robertson established himself as one of Europes finest left-backs last season, offering defensive solidity and representing a key attacking outlet.

The Scotland internationals understudy, Alberto Moreno, departed on a free transfer at the end of last season and the Reds are yet to sign a replacement.

After spending heavily in the transfer market in recent years, Klopp is likely to be more circumspect this summer and thus far has recruited only 17-year-old Dutch centre-half Sepp van den Berg.

Liverpool are also hopeful of agreeing a deal for Fulhams teenage starlet Harvey Elliott but a compensation fee is likely to be agreed by a tribunal.
