Marin Cilic crashed out of Queens in shock fashion on Thursday afternoon as Argentinas Diego Schwartzman secured a surprise straight sets victory.

The Croat is a two-time champion in these parts and beat Serbias world No. 1 Novak Djokovic to win the title in 2018 but the defence of that crown has faltered at the second hurdle.

Cilic, the fifth seed, has not reached a final since beating Djokovic here a year ago, with his form dropping off a cliff. This latest 6-4 6-4 defeat will leave him short on confidence and tumbling down the rankings to at least No. 17.

This was just Schwartzmans third victory on a grass court. The world No. 23 has won just one of his five previous matches at Wimbledon. That certainly didnt show during this impressive display.

He will go on to face either fourth seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev or Frances Lucas Pouille, who took British No. 4 Jay Clarke out in round one.

Schwartzman is the second man to book his spot in the quarter-finals at The Queens Club after Feliciano Lopez advanced courtesy of a walkover on Wednesday night.

The Spaniard – who will partner Andy Murray in the doubles later on Thursday – was due to take on third seed Juan Martin del Potro but the Argentine was forced to withdraw after damaging his knee during victory over Denis Shapovalov.
