Impey snatches Tour Down Under leader’s jersey as Porte wins stage
Cyclist Daryl Impey has snatched the leader's ochre jersey after finishing second in stage 5 of the Tour Down Under in South Australia.
Richie Porte won the McLaren Vale-Willunga stage in a hill finish on another day of high temperatures and at times in strong crosswinds.
Porte now sits second in the fight for overall victory, with the final stage to be raced on an Adelaide city street circuit on Sunday.
"I must give credit to my team, they were fantastic today," he told Channel 9.
"It's probably the hardest time that I've done this climb, it really hurt today."
Porte was full of praise for his opponent who now clings to a tiny overall lead in the event.
"Daryl's had a fantastic tour, and he's ridden smart — it was up to me today to put more time into him and I wasn't quite good enough to finish the job off," he said.
"But I'm happy with another stage."
Impey said he was amazed to now have the overall lead.
"I put in a lot of work for this race but never thought I'd be in the leader's jersey. That's fantastic," he said.
"I'm glad I pushed all the way to the line."
