Jamie Carragher says Liverpool must wait until the summer before allowing Philippe Coutinho to join Barcelona
Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool should sell Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona on the proviso they can secure an mega fee, while they should also only permit their star playmaker to join the Catalan giants in the summer.
After digging their heels in back in August, Liverpool’s Coutinho stance has reportedly softened in recent weeks and a deal is said to be imminent with talks planned in London this week at which a final agreement is likely to be struck.
On Tuesday, Sport claimed Coutinho’s entourage had informed Liverpool that the 25-year-old had played his last game for the club and will not be considered for selection ahead of Friday’s FA Cup third round tie against Everton.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher believes the transfer is now a formality but wants his old club to agree a deal similar to the one the Reds made with RB Leipzig for Naby Keita, who will arrive at Anfield in the summer.
‘Best thing @LFC is agree the BIG fee for Coutinho to go in the summer like we’ve done with Keita, not now,’ Carragher wrote on Twitter.
‘What do the club gain by doing it now? Top 4 & CL progression seriously risked if they sell in Jan, & difficult to replace him now.
‘If he goes on strike he damages himself.’
