Family ‘trapped’ by enormous puddle outside their front door
A family has said they are trapped inside their house by an enormous puddle.
Marc and Gemma Peck have to wade through the cold, dirty, knee-deep water if they want to get out of their home in Plymouth, Devon.
The couple, who have a nine-year-old daughter, said blocked drains have been a problem for years, but post-Christmas showers have made it worse than it’s ever been.
Delivery driver Mark, 32, said: ‘The only way out of our house is to wade through dirty water and get soaking wet.
‘Every time a car drives past too fast it’s like Niagara Falls in my garden.’
They have contacted Plymouth City Council, who said they would send a Highways Agency worker to assess the water, but could not say when.
In their desperation, the couple also contacted South West Water.
An engineer attended and reached the deepest point of the puddle, but decided he was not responsible for the flooding, the couple claim.
A spokesperson for South West Water said: ‘We attended a report of external flooding in Peter’s Park Lane this morning and found two blocked highways gullies – which are the responsibility of the local council.
‘As he was on site, our operator tried rodding the gullies to see if this would clear them but they were too blocked. This will be reported to Plymouth City Council.
‘While in the vicinity, our operator checked the public sewerage network and found no problems.’
Plymouth City Council has been approached for comment.
