Virgil van Dijk to wear No.4 jersey at Liverpool
Virgil van Dijk will become a Liverpool player on January 1 and will take on the No.4 shirt, the club have confirmed.
The centre-back will move form Southampton to Liverpool in a reported £75million deal.
Liverpool have been chasing Van Dijk since the summer, but were forced to back off after Southampton reported them for tapping up their player.
The saga though has finally reached it’s conclusion and Liverpool fans can now look forward to Van Dijk playing in a Reds shirt.
Van Dijk will swap his No.17 Southampton shirt for No.4 at Liverpool and will wear the same jersey donned by Sami Hyypia, Alan Jansen, Phil Thompson and Jason McAteer.
The most recent Liverpool star to own the No.4 shirt was Kolo Toure, who was immensely popular with the Anfield faithful.
Van Dijk will be desperate to repay the Liverpool’s faith in him with the Reds believed to have broken the world record fee for a defender.
And the 26-year-old took to social media to express his joy at signing for Liverpool and honour his time at St Mary’s.
‘Delighted and honoured to have agreed to become a Liverpool FC player,’ he said.
