Terrifying knives found by police after Westfield ‘riot’ during Boxing Day sales
These terrifying knives were seized by police during the Westfield Stratford ‘riot’ during Boxing Day sales.
The shopping centre in east London was closed for a period yesterday after reports several people were bringing disorder – with some describing it as a riot.
Officers dispersed the suspects and arrested individuals for ‘a variety of offences’.
The Met Task Force later tweeted photos of some of the terrifying weapons seized during the disturbance – including huge knives.
A total of eleven people have been arrested since the disturbance – a handful of arrests were made at the scene.
‘Officers from NE TSG (Territorial Support Group) were called to Westfield Stratford to assist.
‘Eight arrests in total for offences including violent disorder, assault and Off. Weapons. #BoxingDaySales.’
Two officers were treated in hospital for minor injuries suffered during the arrests.
Superintendent Roy Smith later took to Twitter to thank police involved, saying: ‘Thank you to officers who acted to prevent harm to the public and for the local support for police use of a Section 60 search power to get these weapons off the streets and prevent people from being killed or seriously injured.’
A Section 60 order was placed on the shopping centre covering a 500-metre radius until 10.30pm, the Newham Borough arm of the Metropolitan Police said on Twitter.
The order gives officers extra powers in the designated area to prevent the occurrence of further disruption. Additional patrols were sent to the area, the force added.
The Section 60 remained in place until 10.30pm last night, police said.
A shocking video appeared online after the trouble flared inside the shopping centre showing masses of shoppers running while security staff attempted to contain them.
Half of all adults were expected to hit the shops yesterday as retailers slashed prices on goods.
Insiders predicted Brits would spend a record £4.5 billion in the Boxing Day splurge – making it the biggest shopping day in history.
A Met Police spokesperson said: ‘Police were called at 2.34pm on Tuesday, December 26 to reports of disturbances at Westfield Stratford City in Montfichet Road, Stratford.
‘Officers attended and additional high-visibility patrols were deployed, and groups causing the disorder were dispersed.’
