Manchester City are using Manchester United failure as Premier League motivation
Pep Guardiola‘s troops sit comfortably at the top of the table and are looking a near certainty to get their hands on silverware at the end of the current campaign.
But club captain Vincent Kompany pointed to local rivals Manchester United as the perfect example not to follow, as he urged his team-mates to remain aware of the pitfalls of complacency.
United, then under Sir Alex Ferguson, led City by eight points with just six games to go before City clawed their way back into contention and were ultimately crowned as champions.
Having lifted the title himself on that occasion, Kompany is more than aware of how quickly things can change.
When asked to compare City’s current lead to United’s slip up, he replied: ‘I draw on that.
‘I don’t know if everyone remembers, but with six games left we were eight points behind.
‘I really don’t want that, so we push and push and push and no-one has the right to let their performance down and let their guard down.
‘We all have a role to say something – there are a lot of experienced lads in the team.
‘We do mention it, but the manager will have mentioned it many, many times as well.
‘But ultimately it’s the same for everyone – we all have that feeling and don’t want it to go away.
‘It’s too early to draw any conclusions. I don’t feel like there is too much difference from other seasons – we have been in high-pressure situations before, like when we had to play United [to move above them in the 2011/12 season].
‘Those are games that are completely different to any other games you will play in your life, but we are in a position where we can just focus on our football and the games.
‘We don’t need to focus on the league, or anything else other than winning the game and having a performance at the same time.
‘It is a bit different, but you can be in a position where the team you are competing with wins early doors and you are playing in the evening and have to win. It’s a different feeling, but the desire to win is the same.’
