Man charged with murder after stabbing in restaurant on Christmas Eve
A 20-year-old charged with murder after a man was stabbed at a restaurant on Christmas Eve will appear in court today.
Mazhar Ali, 41, from Stockton, Teesside, died in hospital on Christmas Day after the restaurant stabbing in Middlesbrough.
He had been rushed to the James Cook University Hospital and was said to have been in a critical condition after the incident at 3.40pm on Sunday.
Efreeqi Mohamed Siddig, 20, from Middlesbrough, has been charged with murder and carrying an offensive weapon.
The restaurant, Manjaros on Linthorpe Road, was supposed to open yesterday to serve homeless families a Christmas Day dinner.
Instead, police have confirmed it will remain shut for the next few days.
Manjaros serves African and Caribbean food and is said to be popular with celebrities including the cast of Geordie Shore and boxer Ricky Hatton.
A witness told Mail Online: ‘It’s sad that something like this happened on Christmas Eve. A lot of people were very disappointed and shocked.
‘When we were leaving, the staff were all stood in a line blocking us from going anywhere near the kitchen or staff area so we had no choice but to go out the door.’
According to reports, customers were urgently asked to leave the restaurant midway through their meals.
Police cordoned off an alleyway behind the premises.
Siddig will appear before Teesside Magistrates’ Court today.
