Dad gunned down and left for dead in Christmas Day shooting
Gang members who shot a man in the stomach and left him for dead have still not been caught a year after the attack last Christmas Day.
Daniel Stone is still receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the shooting – which is suspected to be a case of mistaken identity.
The 26-year-old remembers seeing a gloved hand holding a gun out of a blacked-out car window before he was peppered with more than 60 shots from the custom shotgun.
The father-of-one miraculously survived but only after spending more than a month in a coma and needing more than 20 operations.
But the attackers, who used a weapon police said is usually associated with African elephant hunters, have not yet brought to justice – even though police have made arrests.
Daniel, from Walsall in the West Midlands, had spent the day with his family before he went down the street to say ‘Merry Christmas’ to his friend.
He said: ‘I said goodbye to my grandma and thought I’d be back in five minutes.
‘The car drove past me at first then turned round at the bottom of the street.
‘I tried to look at who was driving it but then the window went down and I saw the barrel of a gun.
‘I heard a loud bang a surge of intense heat – and woke up four weeks later in hospital with machines keeping me alive.’
He was shot once, with the impact leaving 45 pellets in his abdomen and 15 in his arm.
Doctors at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham saved Daniel’s life with the help of 26 units of blood that stopped him bleeding to death.
He added: ‘When I woke up I didn’t know what had happened.
‘I was bleeding to death for two days.’
Five men were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder but were later released without charge.
A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: ‘Five men aged between 18 and 33 who were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder have been released from bail without charge.’
Anyone with information should call Force CID at Wolverhampton on 101.
