Christmas is all about one man’s birthday – but what if it is your birthday on December 25?

Is it good or bad?

Anyone with a birthday near Christmas knows the dreaded line: ‘This is your birthday and Christmas present.’

If you were born on Christmas Day you aren’t alone – other than Jesus Christ, Christmas babies include the Pogues’ Shane McGowan, multi-award winning singer Annie Lennox, former England cricket captain Alastair Cook and rapper Shystie.

Metro.co.uk asked Birmingham mother-of-two Kerry McHugh – who is celebrating her 41st birthday today – what it is like to be a Christmas Day baby.

She said: ‘So when I was a nipper I felt special, school friends would call me Jesus and over the years my mum tried her best to make me feel better because she felt guilty, which says it all.

‘I’ve had the same people every year write cards saying “Happy Christmas and Happy Birthday” and I have had birthday presents wrapped in Christmas paper.

‘And then of course I have had the “this is your birthday and Christmas present in one” – yeah nice one.

‘My mum always felt guilty so tried to separate the two by giving my cards and presents in the afternoon and close mates always remember – well the girls anyway.’

She added: ‘Tonight I left my pals’ house and she said happy birthday for tomorrow and the guilt just dripped from the boyfriend’s face because he had forgotten.

‘But Christmas is stressful enough as it is, no-one needs a birthday to buy for or remember as well do they?

‘My mum was the best at making it feel special but I lost her four years ago so for my 40th last year I had a party the week before and went away so it didn’t matter.

‘The truth about Christmas babies is it feels special, but it isn’t.

‘You lovely lot get a celebration twice a year. We basically get none, ditto, diddly squat but I’m very grateful to my wonderful husband and my eight-year-old twins who try and make it special for me.’

And it seems everyone has got an opinion when they are told people share their birthday with Jesus Christ.

Kerry added: ‘If you mention to anyone your birthday is Christmas day the response is “Oh god that’s awful, how unlucky are you?”

‘Yes I’m unlucky when my birthday is but I still feel pretty lucky because of who I spend it with.’
